Critical Port Outloading Conveyor Belt Replacement

A critical infrastructure upgrade requiring custom belt handling methodologies to minimise downtime in an active port facility.

The Challenge

Replacing 7.6 kilometres of conveyor belt on Outloading Conveyor L15, a critical asset transporting high-grade coking coal 3.7 kilometres from the stockyard to the ship loading wharf. The Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal site offered limited space to perform the necessary preparation and replacement works. This required a process that could overcome severe spatial restrictions and ensure the asset was offline for the shortest practical duration.

Our Solution

Working alongside ContiTech Australia, M Squared developed a custom work methodology incorporating specialised equipment to safely direct and handle the conveyor belt within the confined site footprint. We calculated belt hauling & tension loads in order to develop customised counterweighted equipment bases and restraint solutions. We calculated belt elongations for the correct set-out of the conveyor take-up system, authored the project design risk assessment and project Safe Work Instruction.

The Result

The project was safely delivered on time with no incidents or lost-time accidents. By providing on-site engineering and technical leadership during the replacement works, we ensured strict adherence to the design risk assessments. Our proven engineering models and practical field leadership created an efficient replacement process that kept facility downtime to a minimum and protected operational continuity.
